A 19-year-old freshman from Greenwood Village sank a half-court shot with a basketball and won a year of free tuition at Colorado State University Saturday night.

Andrew Schneeweis, a graduate of Cherry Creek High, made a valuable shot during a freshmen pep rally in Moby Arena.

He had three chances to make the shot but needed only one — and it was, as the hoops fans say, nothing but net.

Schneeweis got the chance from a random drawing.

The university's CTV11 channel interviewed Schneeweis after he made the basket.

"I knew. I knew. I could feel it. It was amazing," he said.

When his mother, Ellen, got the call from her son, she thought he was joking.

"My son always tells the truth, but it sounded too good to be true," she said.

She added, "It couldn't happen to a better kid."

Ram Welcome Week for first-year students was Thursday to Sunday. Fall classes begin on Monday.
