New Jersey Governor Requests $1.27 Billion to Improve Higher Education Infrastructure
Governor Christie has identified 176 projects throughout New Jersey’s higher education community that needs to be addressed. The projects range from additional higher education positions to higher education related construction projects. It is estimated that New Jersey losses 28,000 of its students to out of state colleges. The plan is to correct this trend while improving the quality of education that the state provides.

Connecticut House of Representatives Pass Bill Requiring Board of Regents to Review Administrator Salaries
The bill will require Connecticut’s Board to submit a study comparing administrator salaries of both the state university system and the regional community-technical college to peer institutions. The report which will be submitted in January 2014 and will be required every other year thereafter, will be used to assess personnel cost in relation to other operational expenses. The bill must now go to the state senate.

After approval of the state budget, President Jo Ann Gora vowed to make salaries a top priority at Ball State University. The budget approval includes a 2.8% increase in funding.

Penn College Faculty Receive Contact Extension Through 2017-18
Faculty at Penn College will receive a second extension on their current employment contract that will last through the 2017-18 year. Faculty are currently in their first extension, which will conclude in 2014-15. The college’s Board of Directors unanimously approves the second extension which will provide increases over the next few years.

Recently, Today’s Campus had the opportunity to chat with Dr. Chris Bustamonte, President of Rio Salado Community College,  A man from “humble beginnings,” Dr. Bustamonte, who recently celebrated 20 years in the Maricopa Community College district, details Rio Salado’s history and future, including a recent expansion outside of Phoenix, Arizona. We also asked Dr. Bustamonte about the current educational landscape, higher education’s challenges, and how higher education can continue to improve. It was an honor to converse with Dr. Bustamonte and learn more about Rio Salado and higher education on the whole. We thank Dr. Bustamonte for his time and look forward to watching Rio Salado’s continuing growth!

Smartphones Overtake Desktops with College Students
Students today are more likely to use their smartphones for coursework than a desktop computer, according to the findings of a new Student Watch study conducted by OnCampus Research, a division of the National Association of College Stores (NACS) that helps companies better understand the college age consumer.

St. Petersburg College Goes Live with Student Success Plan, Enlisting Unicon for Services and Support
Unicon, Inc., a leading IT consulting services provider specializing in open source for the education market, announced the deployment of the open source Student Success Plan (SSP) at St. Petersburg College (SPC). SSP is a holistic intervention coaching and counseling model, with case management software. The college is taking advantage of the early alert SSP feature, in which faculty and staff identify student challenges and send early alerts with their reasons and recommendations to engage the appropriate intervention staff. The early alert tool provides a feedback loop to the originator to encourage long-term engagement.
