Geneva Champagne is a fan of the Apple® iPad®.
Champagne, an Illustration major at Moore College of Art & Design in Philadelphia, was among 100 entering BFA students this fall to receive a free iPad for use as a sketchbook and portfolio, as well as a camera for still and moving images.
Pre-populated apps selected to support the visual art and design education at Moore were loaded and ready for students to use in their classes. These apps allow students to develop ideas and concepts – and produce finished work in the design, drawing and color classes as part of a new Foundation curriculum.
Moore is one of the first art and design colleges to partner with Apple to provide iPad devices to all new students.
Champagne said the iPad has helped transform her learning experience. She regularly uses the Asketch app to simulate the experience of charcoal drawing.
“I do ‘pre-sketches’ in Asketch before I do my regular drawings on paper,” she said. “It helps me lay out what I’m going to do and get my bearings for position, scale, even page orientation. It’s like a first draft. It has actually improved my drawings.”
While the primary purpose of this initiative is to support new students, the College will also make available these customized apps and other content to all returning students who already have an iPad device.
